On a Sunday Jesus synodality went to a listening session with Bishop Zurek
at the church of one of the leading Parishes;
and the faithful and loyal disciples who were there were observing them carefully.
He told a parable to those who had been invited,
noticing how they were choosing their usual pews.
“When you are invited to a Synod listening session,
do not sit in your customary pew.
A more distinguished guest from the margins of the Church who seldom attends Mass may have been invited,
and Jesus acting through the bishop who invited both of you may approach you and say,
‘Give your place to this tramp,’
and then you would proceed with embarrassment
to take a place not to your liking.
Rather, when you attend a Synod listening session,
go and take a place where you feel uncomfortable,
so that when the bishop comes to you he may say,
‘My friend, move to your customary pew.’
Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the Synod.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

The West Texas Catholic: We have begun the synod process here in the Diocese of Amarillo. I want to start by asking why the Holy Father is calling this synod.
Bishop Patrick J. Zurek: He calls us to cooperate in the mission of the Church. He addresses a letter to the entire people of God. Pope Francis made this clear when he issued a direct invitation to all the people of God, that is us too here—to contribute to the Church’s efforts towards healing. Everyone of the baptized should feel involved in this ecclesial social change that we so greatly need. This change calls for two kinds of conversion. One is very personal; changing our habits, our thoughts, our actions, not basing them upon social media, etc. but upon the unique gospel of Jesus Christ and then through our conversion, a social change that the world so desperately needs.

All are invited to speak with courage and parrhesia, that is, integrating freedom, truth, and charity. How do we promote a free and authentic style of communication within the community and its organizations, without duplicity and opportunism? And in relation to the society of which we are a part? When and how do we manage to say what is important to us? How does the relationship with the media system (not only Catholic media) work? Who speaks on behalf of the Christian community, and how are they chosen?
