Saturday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time

Haven’t I, my whole life, been simply moving to the #other side—whether in faith, in truth, or in seeking justice—just as our livestock in “The Glenn” always seem to long for the other side of the fence, just as other Christian communities and faith traditions offer their own voices of concern, just as First Saturday Devotions invite us to cross into deeper communion with Mary, just as what was said on a whole other CAPN: “The WTC: The Podcast”, Episode 003 – Notre Dame Lost, Catholic Charities for the Win!, and just as Jesus himself said, Let us cross to the other side.

Gospel

On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples:
“Let us cross to the other side.”
Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was.
And other boats were with him.
A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat,
so that it was already filling up.
Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion.
They woke him and said to him,
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing❓”
He woke up,
rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”
The wind ceased and there was great calm.
Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified❓
Do you not yet have faith❓”
They were filled with great awe and said to one another,
“Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey❓”

Lectio Divina Reflection on “other

Other moments in my life have always seemed to lead me from one place to another, shaping my understanding of faith, justice, and truth. When I first made accusations of clergy abuse at St. Mary’s Cathedral, I found myself on the other side of trust in Church leadership, confronted by Bishop Zurek’s words that people only shout, accuse, and degrade one another. But if no one ever speaks, how does truth ever emerge❓

“People only shout at each other, make terrible
accusations and judgements and degrade the dignity of the human person.”
Alec Benjamin – If We Have Each Other [Official Music Video]

Other Christian communities and even other religions share deep concern for the care of creation and the dignity of all people. Their reflections, though outside the Catholic Church, challenge me to see that God’s truth is never confined to just one voice. If we believe all truth is from God, shouldn’t we listen to others rather than dismiss them❓

Other times, I’ve noticed the way our livestock at “The Glenn” always want to be on the other side of the fence, even when they already have all they need. Perhaps this longing to cross over is not just an animal instinct but something deeply human—a desire for something more, something better, something unknown yet necessary.

Other than the moments I have tried to stay still, my entire life has been a journey of crossing over—from innocence to wisdom, from comfort to challenge, from certainty to deeper faith. If I’ve been called to move toward truth, toward justice, toward understanding, then isn’t the only real question whether I have the courage to listen to Jesus when he says,…

Let us cross to the other side.‘”

Outside the Catholic Church, other Churches and Christian communities – and other religions as well – have expressed deep concern and offered valuable reflections on issues which all of us find disturbing.
