I now speak to all the rest of you, the parishioners of St. Mary’s

Dear Bishop Zurek, in light of today’s Gospel—“Lord, even the dogs #under the table eat the children’s scraps”—Pope Francis’s urging in Laudato si’ not to sweep pressing questions under the carpet, and the Synod’s invitation in An Abundant Catch to foster new ways of exchanging gifts, will you ensure that the Friday, February 14, “No 7:00 AM Mass” at your Cathedral is a Mass, and that my requested intention—“A miracle for Daniel Glenn through the intercession of the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen”—is publicly announced for it❓ I beg you this despite the letter you keep posted declaring me unfaithful and your continued allowance of a memorial erected by a convicted pedophile priest in honor of a bishop you said made a “serious mistake,” so that even one you seem to deem “under” deserving of the mercy shown this priest and bishop may still receive the scraps of grace from the Lord’s table.
Gospel

Jesus went to the district of Tyre.
He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it,
but he could not escape notice.
Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him.
She came and fell at his feet.
The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth,
and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
He said to her, “Let the children be fed first.
For it is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs.”
She replied and said to him,
“Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.”
Then he said to her, “For saying this, you may go.
The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
When the woman went home, she found the child lying in bed
and the demon gone.
Lectio Divina Reflection on “under“

There are moments when I feel like I am constantly under the weight of rejection, pushed aside by those in power who decide who belongs and who does not. The letter that remains posted on the diocesan website places me along with “a few” under judgment, branding us as something less than “faithful and loyal.” Yet, I continue to seek Christ, knowing that His mercy does not depend on the approval of men. Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.
I stand under the great expanse of heaven, praying for a miracle for my son Daniel. I placed my Mass intention in faith, trusting that the Church, which is a mother to all, would not deny me this request. Yet, last Monday, when I placed my intention at St. Mary’s Cathedral for the February 14 7AM Mass, I was told there was “no Mass.” Because of what I was told while in prayer I knew this would not be true. Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.

under the title An Abundant Catch, outlines how we can cultivate new forms of the exchange
of gifts and renew the intertwining of the bonds that unite us in the Church at a time when the
experience of being rooted in a place is changing profoundly.”
Underneath the hierarchy of the Church, I see contradictions that I cannot ignore. A convicted pedophile priest was allowed to erect a memorial to a bishop who, according to Bishop Zurek, made a “serious mistake” in granting him a second chance—yet that monument remains. Meanwhile, I and “a few“, who spoke out for justice, remain under the shadow of a public accusation that calls us unfaithful. Which of these truly defiles the Body of Christ❓ Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.

Even when I stand under the roof of St. Mary’s Cathedral, I wonder if I am truly welcome. I have been told that certain traditions must be upheld to protect the sanctity of the priesthood, like the rule preventing priests from celebrating more than one weekday Mass—even when the other Mass is a funeral. My own mother’s funeral led to the cancellation of the daily 7 AM Mass, leaving me and others to seek the Eucharist elsewhere. But was the sanctity of the priesthood truly at risk, or is something greater lost when the faithful are denied the sacraments❓ Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.

As I see our Livestock Guardian Dog Perezvon lie under a picnic table at The Glenn, I am reminded that creation does not draw boundaries around who is worthy to receive its gifts. The sun shines, the rain falls, and life persists, even in places where it seems unlikely. If nature itself does not withhold its blessings, why should the Diocese of Amarillo❓ Bishop Zurek, will you ensure that the Friday, February 14, 7 AM Mass at your Cathedral occurs, and that the intention of “A miracle for Daniel Glenn through the intercession of the Venerable Fulton J. Sheen” is publicly announced❓ After all,…

“‘Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.‘”

Let us review, however cursorily, those questions which are troubling us today and which we can no longer sweep under the carpet.
