Bishop Zurek writes, and rightfully so, that he’s, “tired of hearing that the Holy Scriptures say nothing about abortion”; however, he hasn’t heard that from me, and given that, “Since the US supreme court overturned Roe two years ago, Amarillo has become something of a ground zero for“, the anti-abortion movement, I don’t think His Excellency will find anyone saying any such thing in his diocese either. So, why is Bishop Zurek pulling out his anti-abortion scrubber and once again cleansing the outside of cups and saucers❓

The shared meaning of synodality

“Synodality in no way entails the devaluation of the particular authority and specific task that Christ entrusts to the pastors: the bishops with the presbyters, their collaborators, and the Roman Pontiff as ” the perpetual and visible principle and foundation of unity both of the bishops and of the multitude of the faithful“; yet, doesn’t Bishop Zurek, seem to have a fear that being synodal with his own laity would, “let people see that” he was not “superior, privileged, placed ‘above’ and therefore separated from the rest of God’s holy people” ❓ Hence, doesn’t a fear of the synod process explain why Bishop Zurek, instead of going on, “this path of synodality which God expects of his Church of the third millennium” to write, Abortion: The Scriptures And Discrimination, went down a rabbit hole to listen to, “One protestant theologian, Jefferis Peterson“, whom, ” Many theologians shy away from accepting his conclusion“, and “various African tribes women who wanted to end a pregnancy” by inserting “various mixtures into their uterus“❓

“Rather, synodality offers “the most appropriate interpretative framework for understanding the hierarchical ministry itself” (Francis, Address in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the institution of the Synod of Bishops, 17 October 2015), inviting the whole Church, including those who exercise authority, to true conversion and reform“; nevertheless, in writing without synodality, Abortion: The Scriptures And Discrimination, has not Bishop Zurek, lived out his teaching authority, “without being aware of duplicity, without humility but with detached and haughty attitudes” that show no care for “the inside of the cup“❓
