LECTIO

MEDITATIO — I Reflect

Today Jesus reminds me that discipleship is not performance, achievement, or the pursuit of praise. It is service, quietly and faithfully offered, even when no one notices.

Not sentiment.
Not tolerance.
Not avoidance of conflict.

St. Martin of Tours understood this. He did not simply give to the poor — he stepped into their world. He saw Christ in the man who shivered on the road and tore his own cloak to cover him. Service was not charity; it was recognition.

Dilexi te says,

“…’our faith in Christ, who became poor, and was always close to the poor and the outcast, is the basis of our concern for the integral development of society’s most neglected members.’”

This truth does not live in abstractions — it lives in the daily work God gives me.

Today my heart turns to Adam, my yearling Barbados Blackbelly ram. I raised him from birth. I have watched him grow, test boundaries, nudge the flock, and find his place. And now, the time has come to let him go. Not because he has failed, but because this is what good stewardship requires — to serve the long flourishing of the flock, not simply my attachment.

The Gospel tells me:
Do what is given to you to do — faithfully — and do not clutch at being seen.

ORATIO — I Pray

Lord, make me willing to serve
when no one applauds,
when no one thanks me,
when the work is quiet and hidden.

Teach me to love your sheep — both the literal and the human ones —
not as possessions, but as trust placed in my hands.

Lord,
increase my faith
so that I may choose mercy quickly,
forgive readily,
protect the fragile,
and restore what has been damaged by coldness of heart.

CONTEMPLATIO — I Rest

I watch Adam from a distance today.
He grazes — unaware of the decisions I carry.
The wind moves the grass.
Nothing is urgent.
God is in this moment.

And I hear softly:

“Be faithful. Be simple. Be mine.”

ACTIO — I Live It

Today, I will:

• Serve quietly without looking for recognition.
• Let go of any task, role, or attachment I have held too tightly.
• See Christ in whoever stands before me.

“We are not God. The earth was here before us and it has been given to us.”

To serve is to remember:
I am caretaker, not owner.
I am steward, not master.

St. Martin of Tours, teach me how to give myself away
so Christ may be seen in the giving.
